Music of Versailles – a lecture

Mount Laurel, June 18, 2012

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

Catherine Sprague will be at Mount Laurel Library on Sunday, July 8 at 2 p.m. to present a history of the Palace of Versailles and the music composed and performed there. The lecture will cover music created from approximately 1623 through the French Revolution. No registration is needed.

Originally begun in 1623 as a hunting lodge by Louis XIII, Versailles soon evolved into the prestigious palace of the “Sun King” that was widely imitated throughout Europe. Entertainment and music were closely intertwined with life at Versailles, with more than 150 musicians attached to the King’s service. The lecture will be enhanced by video and audio clips of the music and art of the era.
